Background of the Study
Network latency is a critical performance metric in modern networked environments, especially in universities where real-time applications like video conferencing, e-learning, and cloud computing are integral to academic and administrative functions (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH), Adamawa State, faces challenges with network latency that hinder the effective use of online resources and services. High latency, or delays in data transmission, can cause frustrating experiences for users, particularly when accessing large databases, streaming educational content, or engaging in real-time communications (Danjuma et al., 2024).
Latency is often influenced by several factors, including network congestion, hardware limitations, poor routing, and geographical distances between endpoints (Suleiman & Adebayo, 2023). For MAUTECH, which serves a large number of students and faculty, addressing network latency is critical to improving the performance of academic and administrative services. Furthermore, with the increasing reliance on internet-based services, students and staff need fast and reliable network connections to engage in research, collaborate, and access learning materials.
This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to network latency at MAUTECH, identify critical latency issues, and recommend strategies to optimize the university's network performance, thus improving user experience and operational efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, suffers from network latency issues that significantly degrade the user experience for both students and staff. The delays in accessing online platforms, attending virtual lectures, and retrieving educational materials create barriers to effective learning and administrative processes. High latency is often associated with poor network performance, leading to disruptions in communication and delays in critical academic and research activities. The university currently lacks a comprehensive understanding of the causes of latency within its network, making it difficult to address the problem systematically.
Objectives of the Study
To investigate the causes of network latency at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola.
To evaluate the impact of network latency on the university’s academic and administrative activities.
To propose solutions for reducing network latency and improving overall network performance at MAUTECH.
Research Questions
What are the primary causes of network latency at Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola?
How does network latency affect the quality of academic and administrative services at MAUTECH?
What strategies can be implemented to reduce network latency and improve network performance at MAUTECH?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on investigating network latency within the main campus of Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State. The analysis will primarily address academic, administrative, and student network traffic. The study may be constrained by factors such as limited access to technical infrastructure, time limitations, and the complexity of diagnosing latency issues across a large network.
Definitions of Terms
Network Latency: The delay in transmitting data between two points in a network, typically measured in milliseconds.
Bandwidth: The maximum rate of data transfer across a network.
Congestion: A state where network traffic exceeds the available bandwidth, leading to delays and slow performance.
Routing: The process of selecting paths for traffic in a network.
